Information:

Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.
Sudden movement or accidental starting of the machine can cause personal injury or death to persons on or near the machine. To prevent personal injury or death, perform the following:Park the machine on a smooth, level surface.Lower the work tool to the ground and engage the parking brake.Stop the engine and remove the key.Block the wheels and install the steering frame lock.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
The 4C-4890 Hydraulic Test Group, the 8T-5320 Hydraulic Test Group, and the 1U-5481 Pressure Gauge Group are used to perform the pressure test of the hydraulic system. Before any tests are made, visually inspect the complete hydraulic system for leakage of oil and for parts that have damage. For some of the tests, a magnet and a measuring rule are usable tools.Visual checks and measurements are the first troubleshooting step for a possible problem. Then perform the operation checks. Then perform the instrument checks. Lower the bucket to the ground. Stop the engine. In order to remove the hydraulic tank filler cap, press the breaker relief valve. Slowly turn the filler cap until the cap is loose. Perform the following inspections:
Check the hydraulic tank oil level. Slowly turn the filler cap until the cap is loose. If oil escapes, lower the tank pressure. The filler cap can then be removed.
Check for air in the oil. Perform this step immediately after the machine is stopped. Use a clear bottle or a container to collect a sample of oil. Look for air bubbles in the oil that is in the bottle.
Remove the filter elements. Look for particles that have been removed from the oil by the filter element. A magnet will separate ferrous particles from nonferrous particles.
Check all the oil lines and connections for damage or for leaks.
Inspect the control linkage for bent components, for broken components, or for damaged components.
