Information:
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot a problem with the fuel filters. Also, use this procedure if one of the following diagnostic codes are active or easily repeated.
Table 1
Diagnostic Codes Table
J1939 Code and Description    Conditions which Generate this Code    System Response
95-15
Engine Fuel Filter Differential Pressure : High - least severe (1)     The difference between the filtered fuel pressure and the unfiltered fuel pressure is greater than the trip point pressure.     The code is logged.
The ECM may derate the engine or shutdown the engine.
95-16
Engine Fuel Filter Differential Pressure : High - moderate severity (2)
95-0
Engine Fuel Filter Differential Pressure : High - most severe (3)    Probable Causes
Fuel filter element
Sensor, wiring, and connectorsRecommended Actions
Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in the order of the listed test steps.
Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Step    Value    Result
1. Check for Active Codes and Logged Codes
A. Establish communication between Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) and the Electronic Control Module (ECM).
B. Monitor the diagnostic codes on Cat ET. Check for active or logged diagnostic codes. Specifically check for codes that could be associated to a restricted fuel supply.
Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for diagnostic codes to become active.

Codes     Result: A code is active or logged.
Repair: Troubleshoot any codes before continuing with this procedure.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Result: A code is not active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Fuel Filter Element
A. Replace the appropriate fuel filter elements for the code.
B. Prime the fuel system. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for information.
C. Restart the engine and check for an active event code for the filter that was changed.

Filter

Result: After starting the engine, the event code is no longer active for the filter that was changed.
STOP
Result: After starting the engine, the event code remained active for the filter that was changed
Proceed to Test Step 3

3. Inspect the Sensor, Wiring, and Connectors
A. Look for damage and corrosion. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for information that is related to intermittent electrical problems.
B. Determine if an associated code is present for a pressure sensor that is related the filter.

Sensor, Wiring, and Connectors

Result: A circuit component is damaged or corroded.
Repair: Repair or replace the circuit component.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Result: There is a fault code for a sensor that is related to the filter.
Refer to Troubleshooting, "Sensor Signal (Analog, Active) - Test"
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
