ReferenceOperation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8417ReferenceDisassembly and Assembly, KENR8382ReferenceDisassembly and Assembly, RENR2588ReferenceDisassembly and Assembly, RENR2037The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem
The rear link seals on the 797 Off-Highway Truck have experienced failures that lead to insufficient lubrication of the joint. If not detected early, the failure could lead to significant contingent damage and extended machine downtime.Solution
If a seal is leaking at a time that is not convenient to service the machine, fill the joint with grease. Properly fix the seal when the machine is serviced at the next scheduled maintenance interval. After the seal is replaced, refill the joint with proper gear oil.Note: Do not continue to operate the machine for an extended time if the seal is out of the position. Without proper lubrication, the bearing will fail.Inspect the rear link seal for leaks. Inspections should take place daily, weekly, and during maintenance intervals. Reporting and Repair
During the seal extraction, the following precautions should be considered to protect the integrity of the seal:
Take pictures before and after the work is completed.
Record any observations before the seal extraction begins (ex: was the seal ripped/damaged before or after the removal? Was the seal leaking on the outside or inside diameter? How many of the seals were leaking? Are there signs of damage to the seals?)
Document the position of the seal (ex: right/left, upper/lower, inner/outer, front/rear). Refer to Illustration 1.
When removing the seal, do not damage the ID of the seal, specifically the rubber material.
During extraction, do not damage the area of the seal that is leaking.
Record the truck hours and the part hours.
Record the truck serial number.Submit information to product support:

(217) 475-4469Procedure to Remove the Seal
Remove the suspension links. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Upper and Lower Link (Suspension) - Remove"
Illustration 1 g03774921
Typical view of a seal that was marked before the removal with the location information
Mark the seal to indicate the area leaking and the link location prior to removal. Note: In Illustration 1 the leak is circled in red and the location is written "LRUI" for Left, Rear, Upper, Inside.
Illustration 2 g03774927
Pop the seal up. Use a screw driver to hold the gap and position a pry bar in the gap.
Illustration 3 g03774930
Move all around the circumference of the seal.
Illustration 4 g03774946
Use blocks to hold the gap and allow for a wider chisel end bar to be positioned and continue lifting the seal out of the link.
Illustration 5 g03774947
Using a cold chisel, deform the outside diameter of the seal to create an outside diameter gap.
Illustration 6 g03774952
Using a pry bar with an angled end in the outside diameter, pry the seal completely out of the link.
