Cat® Electronic Technician (ET)
Cat ET can be used by the technician to help perform the following procedures:
Diagnostic testing
Flash programming
Print various reportsCat ET can display the following information:
Status parameters
Event codes
Diagnostic codes
Electronic Control Module (ECM) settings
ECM ConfigurationAlways use the latest version of Cat ET. The media is available on CD and the media can also be downloaded from various Caterpillar web sites.Once you have downloaded Cat ET onto your PC, you will need a license from your Caterpillar dealer to use the software. Various licenses are available for different users with different requirements. Consult your Caterpillar dealer.Note: For more information regarding the use of Cat ET and PC requirements, refer to the documentation that accompanies your Cat ET software.

Connections for the Communication Adapter III and the Cat ET Service Tool.
The components that are needed to use the Communication Adapter III and Cat ET are:
(1) PC
(2) 353-5083 Computer Cable As (USB)
(3) 317-7485 Communication Adapter (3)
(4) 327-8981 Cable As (Data Link)Follow the instructions for the communication adapter. Use the following procedure to connect Cat ET and the communication adapter to a PC.
Remove the electrical power from the ECM.
Connect cable (1) and (3) to the 317-7485 Communication Adapter Gp (2).Note: The communication adapter will power up when the adapter is connected to a PC or to an ECM that is powered up.
Connect cable (1) to the USB port of the PC.
Connect cable (3) to a service tool connector.
Restore electrical power to the ECM. Verify that the "POWER" indicator on the communication adapter is illuminated. Make sure that the PC is powered up.
Establish communication between Cat ET and the ECM. If Cat ET indicates that there is more than one ECM, select the engine ECM.Note: If Cat ET and the communication adapter do not communicate with the ECM, refer to Troubleshooting "Electronic Service Tool Does Not Communicate".The following are extra service tools that should be used to aid in troubleshooting the electrical system.

For service instructions about the Deutsch "DT" Type connectors, see Special Instruction, SEHS9615.Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool is not required to determine and clear the diagnostic codes. However, the process of determining the diagnostic codes is easier and faster by using Cat ET. Cat ET can also display information on the history of a diagnostic code and the parameter status of diagnostic codes. These features allow Cat ET to be a useful tool for troubleshooting.Use the digital multimeter
