Certain 1882103 SMR seals that were manufacturedbefore the date code of December 13, 2000 may not have a correct radiusat the metal ring ?neck?, which will eventually cut the rubber ring, resultingin final drive oil leakage.ACTION REQUIRED
Using the instructions provided in this letter,inspect all 1882103 SMR seals for seals manufactured prior to the datecode of December 13, 2000. The date code can be found at the metal ringI.D. Remove the seals from dealer stock.1882103 Seal Gp ? SMR Usability Guidelines
These guidelines are intended to prevent the installationof seals that have a sharp corner on the back of the metal seal ring thatcould cut the rubber load ring.
Guidelines by Date Code:
Any seal with a date code earlier thanAugust 29, 2000 should not be used.
Any seal with a date code of August29th through Dec 12, 2000 needs to be inspected according tothe guidelines below.
Any seal with a date code of Dec 13,2000 or later does not need to be inspected and is a good seal.
Inspection Guidelines:A usable seal will have a roundededge at the O.D. and tooth area on the opposite side of the load surfaceas shown in Figure 1. An alternate geometry that is also a good seal hasthe rounded edge at the O.D. and tooth area and a step that moves the sharpcorner away from the O.D. This geometry is shown in Figure 2. If some amountof this step is left around the entire circumference of the seal then theseal is good and no further inspection is needed. Any portion of the circumferencewhere this step has been entirely removed needs to be inspected for sharpcorners.
Having a sharp edge at the O.D.or tooth area makes a seal unusable. An example is shown in Figure 3. Figures 4 and 5 show examples of radius in thetooth area that are acceptable and unacceptable. Figure 4 shows a tootharea that has the bare minimum amount of radius left. Any sharper of acorner than what is shown here should not be used.
