(1) Quick disconnect fittings (2) Tracer dye wafer (3) Desiccant beads (4) Fiberglass mat (5) Orifice tubeThe orifice tube system uses an orifice tube in place of a thermostatic expansion valve. The accumulator, the in-line dryer, and the orifice tube replace the refrigerant receiver-dryer in an expansion valve system.The orifice tube assembly is located at the outlet end of the in-line dryer. The dryer is located in-line between the condenser coil and the evaporator coil. Inside the in-line dryer, the liquid refrigerant passes through a fiberglass mat (4). The refrigerant then passes through the desiccant beads (3) which absorb a small amount of moisture. The refrigerant then passes through another fiberglass mat (4). The two fiberglass mats (4) are used primarily to hold desiccant beads (3) in place. The fiberglass mats (4) also act as a filter. Orifice tube (5) then changes the liquid refrigerant of high temperature and high pressure to a liquid of low temperature and low pressure. Orifice tube (5) provides a metered restriction which causes this change to occur. However, control of the flow rate is determined by pressure differences across the orifice and by subcooling.The in-line refrigerant dryer should be replaced annually. The dryer is designed to be replaced without recovering the system by the use of quick disconnect fittings (1).
