Gas pressure is variable with temperature. The recoil group must be at the same temperature as the air around it before it can be checked or a charge put into it. Use the following chart to get the correct nitrogen charge. For a recoil system with a 9760 kPa (1415 psi) charge, the pressure change is 185 kPa (27 psi) per 5.5°C (10°F).If the temperature of the nitrogen and recoil system at the time of charge are higher than the operating temperature of the recoil system, add 185 kPa (27 psi) to the charge pressure for each 5.5°C (10°F) that the operating temperature lowers.Example: If the charging temperature is 21°C (70°F) and operating temperature is -7°C (20°F), the recoil system should be charged to 10680 kPa (1550 psi).If the temperature of the nitrogen and recoil system at the time of charge are lower than the operating temperature of the recoil system, subtract 185 kPa (27 psi) from the charge pressure for each 5.5°C (10°F) that the operating temperature is higher.Example: If the charging temperature is 21°C (70°F) and operating temperature is 38°C (100°F), the recoil system should be charged to 9210 kPa (1335 psi).Checking the Nitrogen Charge
This test should be performed every six months or whenever excessive belt slippage is observed.1. Remove cover (9) on the rear frame assembly.
Rear Frame Group And Recoil Group(9) Cover.(10) Cap.(11) Valve.2. Remove cap (10) on valve (11). Attach one or two 7S5439 Extensions on valve.3. Make sure that gauge (5) is a 13 800 kPa (2000 psi) gauge.
Turn valve handle (7) fully counterclockwise and close valve (4) before chuck (8) is installed in Step 4. The cylinder is under pressure and sudden release of the pressure can cause personal injury.
4. Install Chuck (8) on the 7S5439 Extension.
Parts from the Nitrogen Charging Group(4) Valve.(5) Pressure gauge.(7) Valve handle.(8) Chuck.5. Turn valve (7) on the chuck (8) completely in (clockwise). Check the temperature of the air around the recoil group. The pressure on the gauge must be inside the tolerances shown on the chart.
When valve (4) is opened with pressure in the cylinder, direct the flow of nitrogen away from all personnel. Pressurized nitrogen can cause serious injury. This procedure should be performed in an area that is well ventilated. High pressure gas can cause suffocation due to oxygen deficiency.
6. If the pressure reading on the gauge is too high, lower the pressure by slowly opening valve (4). When the correct pressure is reached, close valve (4).7. If the pressure reading on gauge (5) is too low, the recoil group must be charged. See Charging the Recoil Group.8. When the pressure reading on the gauge is correct, turn handle (7) on chuck (8) all the way counterclockwise. Remove chuck (8). Remove the extension from valve (11) and install cap (10).
