Fuel System Primary Filter - Replace
Personal injury or death may result from failure to adhere to the following procedures.Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.
Do not fill fuel filter with fuel before installing the fuel filter. Contaminated fuel causes accelerated wear to fuel system parts.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Open the right engine access door.

In order to drain primary filter (1), open drain valve (3) on water separator bowl (2). The water separator bowl is under primary filter (1). Catch the fuel in a suitable container.Note: Discard any drained fluids according to local regulations.
Remove primary filter (1) and water separator bowl (2).
Remove water separator bowl (2) from the primary filter element (1).
Wash water separator bowl (2) in a clean nonflammable solvent. Use pressure air to dry water separator bowl (2).
Install the clean water separator bowl onto a new primary filter element.
Wash the filter mounting base in clean, nonflammable solvent. Make sure that all of the old seal is removed.
Coat the seal of the new filter element with clean diesel fuel.
Install the new filter element by hand.Instructions for the installation of the filters are printed on the side of each Caterpillar spin-on filter. For non-Caterpillar filters, refer to the installation instructions that are provided by the supplier of the filter.Fuel System Secondary Filter - Replace

Before you replace the fuel system secondary filter, replace the fuel system primary filter. See “Fuel System Primary Filter - Replace” in this story for the procedure.
Open the right engine access door. The secondary fuel filters are mounted on the engine next to the primary fuel filter.

Remove the secondary fuel filters. Drain the fuel into a suitable container.Note: Discard any drained fluids according to local regulations. Discard the fuel filter properly.
Clean the filter bases. Make sure that all of the old seal is removed.
Coat the seal of the new high efficiency fuel filters with clean diesel fuel.
Install the new filter elements by hand.Instructions for the installation of the filters are printed on the side of each Caterpillar spin-on filter. For non-Caterpillar filters, refer to the installation instructions that are provided by the supplier of the filter.
Open the fuel shutoff valve.
