Engine News SEBD9719, 28 July 2011, "A New Elbow and Clamps Are Used for the Oil Cooler Bypass Tube on Certain 3500 Engines". The original article has been revised to add several serial numbers. No other information has changed.Description of Change: The new oil cooler elbow is designed to accommodate a bolted walling clamp assembly for the oil cooler bypass tube. The new elbow and clamp assembly are more resistant to vibration of the tube. The improved clamping provides a better seal at the joint for the elbow and the tube.Adaptable To: The 369-9509 Oil Cooler Elbow replaces the 7N-5413 Elbow in the engines that are listed above.The 369-9509 Oil Cooler Elbow is adaptable to the above engines back to first production. Effectivity is listed in Table 1.

Remove plug (1) and four bolts (2) from the original oil cooler elbow. Remove the elbow and remove tube (3) from elbow (4) .

Inspect the bore of elbow (4) for wear due to vibration of the tube and O-ring seal in the bore. If a groove can be seen or felt in the bore, replace the elbow.

Lightly lubricate the bores for the O-ring seals in the ends of tube (3) with clean engine oil. Install new O-ring seals (5) onto the tube. Make sure that no engine oil is on the outside of the tube. Install retaining ring (6) near the O-ring seal that will be inserted into the new oil cooler elbow.
