.Napier NA 297 turbochargers will replace ABB VTC 254 turbochargers on the above engines in the applications that follow:
All 900 rpm and 1000 rpm Marine ratings
All fast vessel ratings
All front mounted turbocharger
All 900 rpm and 1000 rpm generator setsThe new turbocharger has the following features:
Turbocharger bearings that are lubricated by the lube oil system of the engine
A turbine housing that is not water cooled
A higher pressure ratio across the compressorThe higher pressure ratio across the compressor provides the following benefits:
Increased inlet manifold pressure at maximum power
Increased turbocharger efficiency
decreased emissions
decreased temperatures at the turbine inletThe Special Instruction, REHS0285, "Disassembly and Assembly of the Napier NA 297 Turbocharger" is available from normal literature ordering channels. The Special Instruction provides the information that follows:
Identification of special tools that are needed for disassembly and assembly
Details about the disassembly and assembly procedures of the turbocharger
Details about the disassembly and assembly procedures of the major components of the turbochargerMaintenance Practices
The maintenance intervals for the turbocharger will depend on the following criteria:
Operating conditions of the turbocharger
Quality of the engine oil
Condition of the engine oilTurbocharger Turbine Wheel, Turbine Nozzle, Compressor Wheel, and Diffuser
Clean and inspect the intake and the exhaust sides of the turbocharger after each 8,000 hours of operation.Thrust Bearing
Clean and inspect the thrust bearing should be cleaned and inspected. If necessary, replace the thrust bearing.Journal Bearings
Clean and inspect the journal bearings after each 8,000 hours of operation. If necessary, replace the journal bearing.Balancing the Turbocharger Shaft, the Turbocharger Compressor Wheel, and the Turbocharger Turbine Wheel
The rotating parts of the turbocharger include the following parts:
The turbocharger shaft and turbine wheel
The turbocharger compressor wheelBalance the rotating parts of the turbocharger at the Top End Overhaul or after every 18,000 to 24,000 hours of operation. Also, balance the rotating parts if any of the rotating parts experience damage or if any of the rotating parts are replaced.
