The turbine side of the turbocharger is connected between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust elbow. The compressor side of the turbocharger is connected between the air cleaners and the aftercooler.

(10) Exhaust inlet The exhaust gas that enters exhaust inlet (10) pushes the blades of turbine wheel (5). Rotation of the turbine wheel causes compressor wheel (1) to rotate.Clean air from the air cleaners is pulled through air inlet (7) by the rotation of compressor wheel (1). The air is compressed by the compressor wheel. Compression of the air provides more power because the compression allows the engine to burn additional fuel with greater efficiency.The maximum speed of the turbocharger is determined by the fuel setting, the high idle rpm, and the altitude.If the turbocharger is providing too much boost pressure, the exhaust bypass valve opens in order to divert some of the exhaust gas away from the turbine wheel directly to the exhaust elbow.Pressurized engine oil lubricates bearings (2) and (4). Engine oil enters inlet (3). The engine oil goes through passages in the center section for lubrication of the bearings. The engine oil exits through outlet (9) and returns to the engine block through the drain line.For engines with dry exhaust manifolds, the bearing housing in the turbocharger is cooled by the jacket water coolant. Coolant from the coolant inlet line enters the side of the center section. The coolant travels through coolant passages (8) in the bearing housing. The coolant then leaves the turbocharger at the other side of the center section.For water cooled exhaust manifolds, the center section is not cooled. However, the exhaust housing for the turbine wheel is cooled.
