3304 Engines With Cylinder Liner CounterboreIntroduction
This instruction is to be used when replacing an original cylinder block that has cylinder liner counterbores, with a 0R2077 Remanufactured Short Block Group. The cylinder block in the Remanufactured Short Block Group MAY or may NOT have cylinder liner counterbores.If the original cylinder block and the Remanufactured Short Block both HAVE counterbored cylinder liners:* Refer to the Parts Book for the correct cylinder head gasket, seals, etc., that are needed to make the installation.If the Remanufactured Short Block does NOT have counterbored cylinder liners, and the original cylinder head from a non-spacer plate cylinder block is to be used again:* Additional parts (spacer plate, spacer plate gasket, seals and head gasket) will be needed for cylinder head installation. These parts are included with a spacer plate short block group. These parts are included with a spacer plate short block group.Because of the oil supply that is needed for the cylinder head valve mechanism, use ONLY the spacer plate and other additional parts that are INCLUDED, if an original cylinder head (from counterbored liner cylinder block) is to be installed on a Remanufactured Short Block.Refer to Additional Parts Included With Spacer Plate Short Block for the parts that are included. It is our recommendation to ALWAYS follow the Pressure Lubrication Procedures, as outlined in the above Special Instruction, BEFORE the engines initial start-up.
A remanufactured engine and short blocks MUST have adequate lubrication during the first few seconds of engine cranking and engine start.An engine start WITHOUT this lubrication can cause engine component(s) damage.Engine Assembly
1. Clean the protective coating from all parts in the short block group. After installation of the camshaft, put clean engine oil on the cylinder liner walls and the lifters. Turn the crankshaft several revolutions to get a good distribution of lubricant on these parts.2. Before further installation of parts on the new short block:* Measure crankshaft end clearance.* Inspect cylinder head for flatness.Refer to Specifications in the Service Manual.3. The spacer plate gasket, spacer plate and head gasket MUST be clean and dry. Do NOT use a gasket sealant.The 9Y1798 Seals(s) and 7N8018(s) Seals must be installed BEFORE cylinder head installation. Correct Sleeve/Dowel or Plug/Dowel Identification
Refer to location (A) on original cylinder block. Drive the dowel to the dimension shown.The part number of the sleeve and dowel or plug and dowel MUST be identified to ensure correct parts replacement:* Some engines will have a 1S1768 Sleeve (1) and 4L3395 Dowel (2) at location (A) ... and* Some engines will have a 4B3938 Plug (3) and 2A3798 Dowel (4) at location (A).Install the correct parts after identification.4. Install the remainder of the parts needed on the new Remanufactured Short Block. Do NOT reuse gaskets and seals.Refer to the Service Manual for torque values, tightening sequences, special tools, special procedures and the specifications needed for assembly of the engine components.Oil Filter Base
