Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Low Quality Fuel
A. Obtain a fuel analysis.
Fuel
Result: The fuel quality is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: The fuel quality is not OK.
Replace the fuel. Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for information on the proper characteristics of the fuel for the engine.
2. Electrical Connectors
A. Check for the correct installation of the J1/P1 and the J2/P2 connectors that are for the Electronic Control Module (ECM).
B. Check for the correct installation of the fuel injector connectors.
Connectors
Result: The ECM connectors and fuel injector connectors are properly installed.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The ECM connectors and fuel injector connectors are NOT properly installed.
Repair connectors that are suspect, or replace connectors that are suspect.
Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for more information.
3. Injector Solenoids
A. Perform the "Injector Solenoid Test". Observe that the injector solenoids are being energized on Cat ET.
Refer to Troubleshooting, "Injector Solenoid - Test".
B. Perform the "Cylinder Cutout Test"
Solenoids
Result: The injectors solenoids are operating properly.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The injector solenoids are NOT working properly.
Isolate the misfiring injector. Replace the suspect injector.
4. Engine Lubrication
A. Check the following components for sufficient and proper lubrication:
- Valve components
- Injector tappets
- Rocker arms
B. Check for blocked oil passages.
Lubrication
Result: Engine lubrication is sufficient to components
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: Engine lubrication is NOT sufficient to components.
Clean any of the oil passages that are questionable.
5. Valve Lash
A. Check the valve lash.
Valve lash
Result: The valve lash is within specification.
Proceed to Test Step 6
Result: The valve lash is NOT within specification.
Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Engine Valve Lash - Inspect/Adjust"
6. Valve Train Components
A. Check the following valve train components for damage:
- Camshaft
- Valve rotocoil
- Valve springs
- Camshaft followers
- Rocker shaft
- Bridges
- Fuel injectors
B. Check for valve that do not move freely.
Valve train components
Result: The valve train components are OK.
Proceed to Test Step 7.
Result: The valve train components are NOT OK.
Replace any damaged parts. Ensure that the following components are free of contamination: cylinder liner, piston, and exhaust system.
7. Connecting Rod Bearings
A. Inspect the connecting rod bearings and the bearing surfaces (journals) on the crankshaft.
B. Check the piston pin for excessive wear.
Connecting rod components
Result: The connecting rod bearings and/or piston pins are in good condition.
Result: The connecting rod bearings and/or piston pins are NOT in good condition.
Replace any damaged parts. Verify that the problem was resolved.
