PROBLEM
The existing oscillation joint thrust washers can wear or crush in the final drive group of certain 16M Motor Graders. If the thrust washers fail, they can cause the lip seal to leak.

Measure the tandum sag as described in the attached rework procedure. Make sure the measurements are included in the claim story.
If the tandem sag is greater than allowed perform the 13Feb2012 Service Letter - PS52171. Note that both the before and after repair measurements are required for PS52171.

This containment program allows a total of 2.0 hours to measure the tandum sag on both sides of the machine. No parts or other labor will be allowed.
Make sure the measurements are included in the claim story.

Rework Procedure
Tandem Sag Measurement Procedure
1. With the machine on level ground, place a scale between the enclosure on top of the walkway and record the distance from the enclosure to the edge of the walkway as shown in the picture labeled Machine Down.
2. Raise the back of the machine into the air and repeat this measurement using the same reference points on the enclosure and the walkway as shown in the picture labeled Machine Up. Record the measurement.
3. Subtract the Machine Down value from the Machine Up value and record this difference. This is the Tandem Sag Measurement.
4. If the Tandem Sag Measurement reaches 10 mm or more, then schedule an immediate rebuild.
5. Record the measurement for each tandem and include in the claim story. (This is required for claim payment.)
