J1939 CAN A Data Link connections
The MID 081 CID 0533 diagnostic code is associated with the J1939 CAN A Data Link communication circuits. The system that is used for communication between the Drivetrain ECM and the Brake ECM. The CAN A circuits are used for truck systems communication between all of the control modules on the machine. The FMI 09 means that the Drivetrain ECM is not receiving any communication from the Brake ECM on the CAN A Data Link communication system. The possible conditions that can cause the Drivetrain ECM to activate this diagnostic code are listed:
An open or a poor connection in the CAN A Data Link circuits at the Brake ECM connector.
A Brake ECM software problem.
The Brake ECM has failed. The connection diagram at the beginning of this procedure shows the general order in which each of the control modules is connected in the system. The Inverter Cabinet section shows all of the connections that are in the cabinet. The section outside of the cabinet shows the correct connection order but does not show all of the harness connectors and splices. For system connections outside of the Inverter Cabinet, refer to the complete machine electrical schematic that is in the Service Manual. Some sections of the CAN A system are connected in a series configuration and some sections are connected in a parallel configuration. If some control modules, have activated a CAN A related diagnostic code and others have not, investigate which controls are involved. Determine how the controls are connected in the system. Determining the connection order may provide an idea of which section of the system could be causing the problem.

(2) Chassis ECM
(3) Brake ECM Note: No high voltage compartment or enclosure should need to be opened for this procedure. If a condition occurs where a high voltage compartment must be opened, the Power Train Electrical System Service Shutdown procedure must be performed before the cover is removed. Refer to the Troubleshooting, "Electrical Shutdown and Voltage Discharge" section of this manual for the procedure that must be performed before any high voltage compartment cover can be removed.Test Step 1. CHECK THE DATA LINK CIRCUIT FOR AN OPENIn this step, the data link circuit connections for some of the controls in the system that are connected in series will be checked for continuity individually. A resistance will not measure through the control module circuits when the power is off.
Turn the key start switch and the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
At the Drivetrain ECM, disconnect the machine harness connector J2. Check the condition of the harness connector contacts and the ECM connector contacts. Ensure that all of the pins and sockets are
