Severe engine damage could result if the wrong hole is used for pin timing the engine.
1. Remove the valve covers.2. Remove two bolts and remove the cover from the flywheel housing to open the turning hole.3. Use a 9S-9082 Turning Tool to rotate the engine in the normal direction of rotation (counterclockwise when viewed from the flywheel end of the engine).4. Observe the valve movement on cylinder number 6.5. Stop rotation when the exhaust valve for cylinder number 6 (long rocker arm) closes and the intake valve for cylinder number 6 (short rocker arm) starts to move.6. Check that number 1 piston is at top center of the compression stroke by trying to move the rocker arms for cylinder number 1 by hand. If the rocker arms move then the number 1 piston is at top center of the compression stroke. If the rocker arms do not move, rotate the engine 360 degrees and check again.7. Once the number 1 piston is at top center, put one of the turning hole cover bolts in the timing hole located approximately 127 to 152 mm (5 to 6 in) above the turning hole in the flywheel housing. Use the turning hole cover bolt as a timing bolt. Engage the bolt with the threaded hole in the flywheel. Make a reference mark on the front cover and the damper using a permanent type marker. If the flywheel is rotated beyond the point where the timing bolt engages in the threaded hole, the flywheel must be rotated opposite normal engine rotation approximately 30 degrees. Then turn the flywheel in the direction of normal rotation while observing the valve movement until the timing bolt engages with the threaded hole. This procedure removes backlash (play) from the gears when the number 1 piston is put on top center.8. Adjust the valve lash and injector prestroke as needed. Adjust exhaust valves for cylinders 1, 3, and 5. Adjust inlet valves for cylinders 1, 2, and 4. Adjust the injector prestroke for cylinders 3, 5, and 6.9. Remove the timing bolt and rotate the engine in the normal direction of rotation 360 degrees. Stop rotating when the reference marks are aligned.10. Put the timing bolt in the timing hole and engage the bolt with the threaded hole in the flywheel. If the flywheel is rotated beyond the point where the timing bolt engages in the threaded hole, the flywheel must be rotated opposite normal engine rotation approximately 30 degrees. Then turn the flywheel in the direction of normal rotation while observing the valve movement until the timing bolt engages with the threaded hole.
