Ensure that the Avoidance Zone is sized to include a sufficient safety margin about the area of risk. Considerations when establishing the safety margin include both the size of the machine and the operating speed of the machine.
Avoidance Zones are used in order to remind the operator to avoid entering specific areas on the site. Warning messages and beeps alert the operator that the machine is inside one of these zones. Additionally, the operator is alerted when the system cannot provide Avoidance Zone warnings. Avoidance Zone information is contained in files with a "*.cat" file extension. The *.cat files are sent to the machines from METSmanager. The *.cat files that are selected as "Prime" and "Active" are the files that are used for Avoidance Zone warnings.A rectangular zone surrounding the machine is configured in order to determine when the machine has entered one of the zones that is specified within the Prime or Active files. When one of two following conditions occurs, the operator will be alerted that the machine is in an Avoidance Zone:
Any Avoidance Zone intersects the configured zone surrounding the machine
Any point of an Avoidance Zone is within the configured zone surrounding the machineNote: Avoidance Zones can be obscured by as-built surface information. To avoid this situation, ensure that suitable colors are used for Avoidance Zones.Defining an Avoidance Zone
The first step in creating an Avoidance Zone file is the creation of a "closed" polygon that defines the required area to avoid. The closed polygon should be created using the design software package and saved to a file with a "*.dxf" file extension. METSmanager should then be used in order to convert the *.dxf file into an Avoidance Zone file with a *.cat file extension.Avoidance Zone Configuration Keys
