Installing the Clutch on the Engine
Illustration 1. Location of components in rear power take-off clutch. For easier assembly, it is a good practice to pre-fit pilot bearing (1) in the front of the clutch. It should be a slip fit. If not, polish the bore in the clutch with emery cloth until there is a slip fit.
Use a dial indicator to measure and record the engine crankshaft end play.
Install 8L5159 Pilot Bearing (1) flush with the rear face of 7C8373 Stub Shaft (2).
Install the power take-off (PTO) clutch on the engine. Disengage the clutch. Put a piece of wood against the end of clutch output shaft (7) to protect the end of the shaft. Hit the piece of wood sharply, several times. This ensures that the pilot bearing is not bound up in the bore in the front of the clutch, causing a preload on rear main clutch bearing (6) and the engine thrust bearing. The blows also help seat front taper roller bearing cup (5) against bearing retainer (9).
Use a dial indicator to again measure the engine crankshaft endplay. The endplay must be identical to the value recorded previously. Then use the dial indicator to measure the PTO clutch end play. The measured PTO end play [0.13 mm (.005 in)] will not be accurate, but will help ensure there is no preload on the PTO taper roller bearings. Operate hand lever (4) to visually verify.
When a new or a newly rebuilt PTO clutch assembly is run on an engine for the first time, the rear main bearing temperature may peak at 75°C (165°F) above ambient temperature for the first three to four hours of running until the bearings purge themselves of excessive grease. This temperature is measured on the external surface of bearing carrier (8). After this time, the bearing temperature should drop to less than 54°C (130°F) above ambient temperature.
PTO Clutch Main Bearing End Play And Lubrication Procedures
Procedure for New Tapered Roller Bearings (less than 50 hours of operation)
1. Put a light coat of SAE 10W oil on the taper roller bearing cups and cones.2. Rotate output shaft (7) three revolutions minimum to seat the rollers. Tighten bearing retainer (9) until a uniform turning force (drag torque) of 6.8 N m (60 lb in) is required to rotate output shaft (7). If the turning force is not constant, rotate the shaft until it is constant, or disassemble bearing carrier (8) and look for the cause. This could be rough spots on the cups or cones of bearings (5) and (6), or metal chips.3. When viewed from the end of the clutch with the pilot bearing (1), mark the seventh slot on bearing retainer (9) and adjacent bearing carrier (8) that is clockwise from the lock slot in the bearing carrier. To determine the seventh slot; start by counting as number one, the bearing retainer slot that it is in line with, or just clockwise of the lock slot in the bearing carrier. Remove bearing retainer (9).4.
