Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

(5) Plunger/packing sideTo ensure that a thorough inspection is being completed, all components and contaminates must be removed from the internals of the fluid end. This will allow the inspector to have a clear view of the internals of the fluid end and visually see any damage that may be present.Visual Inspection

Washout in suction sealing area
Inspect the fluid end for the following:
Cracks
Washout (erosion of the fluid end)
Major pitting
Excessive wear in sealing areas
Thread damageInspect each bore of the fluid end on all sides and document all notes for each individual bore to determine what bores are repairable. Certain areas in the fluid end can be repaired while others cannot. All sealing surfaces MUST be dimensionally inspected to determine if the fluid end is still within tolerance. These critical areas include the following:
Packing Bores
Suction Seal Area
Discharge Seal Area
Discharge/Suction Seat Sealing AreaNote: If any of these areas are out of spec, the possibility for a wash out failure increases significantly.Fluid End Failure Report

(6) Drive sideThe Bore number sequence can change from customer to customer. The standard sequence used for Cat manufactured fluid ends begin from the drive side (engine/transmission side) of the fluid end with bores 1 through 5.
