--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------Caterpillar recommends using the following procedure whenever a main bearing cap is installed. Also, use this procedure when a main bearing cap is being reinstalled in field service.
Main Bearing Cap Installation Procedure
Use the appropriate Disassembly And Assembly Manual as a reference for information not included in this procedure.
1. Retighten the studs in the cylinder block to a torque of 100 20 N m (74 15 lb ft).2. Be sure the bearing cap and bearing are clean. Put the bearing in position in the bearing cap and put a light coat of clean engine oil on the bearing. Put the bearing cap in position and install the washers and bearing cap nuts. Hand tighten the nuts.3. Put a light coat of 4C-5593 Anti-Seize Compound on the washer face and threads of the bearing cap side bolts (main bearing saddle bolts). Avoid excessive anti-seize compound application. Be sure all surfaces of the main bearing are free of any anti-seize compound. Install all the bearing cap side bolts hand tight.4. Starting at the front face of the cylinder block, tighten only the bearing cap side bolts on the right hand side, as viewed from the flywheel end of the engine (bearing tab side), to a torque of 215 40 N m (160 30 lb ft).5. Starting at the front face of the cylinder block, use the stud tensioner cylinder tool group to simultaneously tension each pair of main bearing cap studs. Run the pump until a pressure of 65 000 2400 kPa (9425 348 psi) is registered on the gauge. Hand tighten the nuts and then release the pressure in the stud tensioner tool.6. Repeat Step 5.7. Starting at the front face of the cylinder block, tighten only the bearing cap side bolts on the left hand side as viewed from the flywheel end of the engine (opposite the tab side), to a torque of 215 40 N m (160 30 lb ft).8. Starting at the front face of the cylinder block, tighten only the bearing cap side bolts on the right hand side of the engine (bearing tab side), to a torque of 1825 175 N m (1340 130 lb ft).9. Starting at the front face of the cylinder block, tighten only the bearing cap side bolts on the left hand side as viewed from the flywheel end of the engine (opposite the tab side), to a torque of 1825 175 N m (1340 130 lb ft).
