3500 Family Of Comerical EnginesReference: Engine News, July 13, 1992; Page 1; "New Steel Plunger Used In Oil Filter Relief Valve Plunger; Use 2P-4005 Oil Filters Instead Of 1R-0716 Oil Filters" An improved 1R-0716 Oil Filter, with a stronger center tube is now approved for used on all 3500 engines using spin-on oil filters. Previous reports of the center tube collapsing on 3500 engines during cold start were resolved by the use of the 2P-4005 Oil Filters. (See the Reference Article.) The improved 1R-0716 Oil Filter utilizes a stronger center tube, capable of handling the higher pressure spikes that can occur during start up of 3500 engines in cold ambient conditions. The improved center tube is also more resistant to weakening as a result of coolant contamination.
While there is no part number change, the improved oil filters can be identified by using the date code. This date code is identified on each filter by "inked" letters located on the outer shell of the filter. All 1R-0716 Oil Filter bearing the date code of "NONMDE" (08/02/93 OR 08FEB93), or any date code starting with "ULNKDE" (16/07/93 or 16JUL93) and later have the improved center tube. The 2P-4005 filter can still be used on 3500 engines while available. The previous version of the 1R-0716 Oil Filters, which have older dated codes, can still be used on non-3500 applications which have been using these filters.
