The sleeve is connected to the spool by drive pin (12). Drive pin (12) is installed through a slot in the spool and a hole in the sleeve. Centering spring (13) holds the spool and the sleeve in alignment in the neutral position.Metering section (1) consists of rotor ring (14) and rotor (15). The spool is connected to the rotor by drive shaft (9). Drive shaft (9) has a slot that engages with drive pin (12) and drive shaft (9) is splined to the rotor of the metering section.The steering column is connected to the spool by a spline coupling.Steering pump oil flows into the control section through inlet port (6). When the steering wheel is not being turned, the flow is blocked by the spool.When the steering wheel is turned, spool (10) turns and spool (10) starts to compress centering spring (13). When the drive pin contacts the ends of the slots in the spool, the sleeve also turns. As the steering wheel is turning, the spool and the sleeve turn as a unit and the centering spring is compressed.The initial movement of the spool opens passages between the control section and the metering section. This allows inlet oil to flow from port (6) to the metering section.

Metering section (14) Rotor ring (15) RotorSteering wheel rotation turns rotor (15) inside rotor ring (14). As the rotor turns, a metered flow of oil from the steering pump is sent back through the housing. The oil flows to the right turn port or the oil flows to the left turn port. This depends on the direction of rotation. The oil then flows to the steering cylinders.When the speed of the rotation of the steering is increased, the oil flow rate to the steering cylinders is increased. Additional oil flow bypasses the metering section and flows directly from the control section to left steer port (4) or to right steer port (2) .When rotation of the steering wheel is stopped, centering spring (13) moves the spool and the sleeve back into alignment. This closes the passages between the control section and the metering section.The steering metering pump allows the number of turns (stop to stop) of the steering wheel to vary depending on the speed of the steering wheel. As the steering wheel is turned slowly, 7 to 8 turns of the steering wheel are required in order to fully articulate the machine. As the steering wheel is turned quickly, 4 to 5 turns of the steering wheel are required in order to fully articulate the machine.This feature makes the machine easier
