Suspension frame (6) is attached to front frame (4) by pivot pins (5) .Suspension cylinders (2) are mounted between the suspension frame and the front frame by pin (1) and pin (3). The suspension cylinders are connected to a nitrogen charged accumulator that acts as a spring.This arrangement allows vertical movement of the axle as the suspension frame pivots. Suspension hydraulic system (1) Suspension cylinder (2) Accumulator (3) Hoist control valve (4) Accumulator piston (5) Shutoff valve (6) Line to the tank (7) Shutoff valve (8) Oil (9) Nitrogen gasDuring normal operation, shutoff valve (5) and shutoff valve (7) are closed. Accumulator (2), suspension cylinders, and the connecting lines form a closed system.Shutoff valve (7) is connected to hoist control valve (3). Shutoff valve (3) is used in order to raise the suspension. Shutoff valve (5) is connected to the tank. Shutoff valve (5) can be used with shutoff valve (7) in order to lower the suspension.The piston rods of the suspension cylinders are extended past the midstroke position when the machine is unloaded. When the machine is loaded, the additional weight moves the piston rods further into the suspension cylinders. This forces oil from the suspension cylinders into the accumulator. This raises accumulator piston (4). This increases the pressure of the nitrogen gas.When the machine is moving, the suspension frame pivots as the wheels follow the ground contours. The suspension cylinders move continually above the midstroke position and below the midstroke position and oil flows in and out of the accumulator.The nitrogen gas in the accumulator acts as a spring. The nitrogen gas compresses in order to absorb the shock as oil is forced into the accumulator from the suspension cylinders. The nitrogen gas expands in order to absorb the shock when the oil flows back to the suspension cylinders.
