Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact skin.
Start the engine.
Operate the transmission until the temperature of the oil is at normal operating temperature. Normal operating temperature is 66 °C to 82 °C (150 °F to 180 °F).
Turn off the engine.

Clean the area around oil filler cap (1) and filler tube (2). Remove the oil level dipstick by turning the handle in order to allow the oil to drain. Note: The oil level dipstick is integral with the oil filler cap for the torque converter and transmission oil. The oil filler cap is located on the right side of the transmission.

Clean the area around the ecology drain (3) and magnetic plug (4). Remove the oil drain plug (3) and allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
Remove magnetic plugs (4) from the right side of the planetary gear housing and from the bottom rear of the transmission. Inspect the magnetic plugs for large particles of debris. An excessive amount of debris may be an indication of possible failure. Discolored oil or oil with an odor requires a careful analysis of S O S results. If large particles are found, consult your Caterpillar dealer for further analysis and additional guidance.
Reinstall the oil drain plug (3), magnetic plug (4), and the related O-ring seals.
Fill the transmission with new oil through filler tube (2). Fill the transmission to the "FULL" mark on the oil level dipstick. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)", Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Torque Converter and Transmission Oil Level - Check".
Guide the oil level dipstick down the filler tube and turn the handle in order to make the seal between the filler tube and the oil filler cap.
Run the engine at LOW IDLE.
Place the transmission control in the NEUTRAL position.
The vehicle must be stationary.
Inspect the transmission, the oil drain plug (3) and magnetic plug (4) for leaks.
Remove the oil level dipstick and clean the oil level dipstick by wiping with a clean cloth.
Guide the oil level dipstick down the filler tube and turn the handle in order to make the seal between the filler tube and the oil filler cap.
