Information:
The Caterpillar Single Module System (SMS) Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) uses a flywheel to store mechanical energy in the form of a rotating mass. When utility power service is interrupted, the UPS will convert the mechanical energy. The energy is supplied to the external load until one of the following conditions occur:
The Standby Generator assumes the load
Utility power is available again
The Flywheel runs out of energyOnce utility power service returns, the system will transfer the load back to utility power service without an interruption. The UPS Single Module System can be used in a wide range of commercial power applications. The systems provide voltage regulation and protection from power failures. This is done in order to provide regulated power to critical loads in the event of sags, surges, or outages. The components of the SMS are enclosed in steel cabinets.System Diagram

System Diagram (1) Input Node (2) DC Bus (3) Inverter Node (4) Output NodeThe UPS system includes the following components: Input Node, Output Node and Inverter Node. The nodes determine the state of the system. The Input Node (1) and the Output Node (2) are externally available. These nodes are used in order to attach the system to a power source and to the load. The Inverter Node (3) is used internally by the system. The DC Bus (2) is used as a power source for the field coil currents. The mode of the system will determine if the bus is used as a power source for the flywheel or if the bus is used as a power source for the Utility Inverter.Additional components in the UPS System include the following:Input Contactor - A mechanical contactor that is used to control the flow of electricity into the UPSOutput Contactor - A mechanical contactor that is used to control the flow of electricity from the UPSBypass Contactor - An electrically operated contactor that is used to bypass the systemStatic Switch - The static switch is a semiconductor device (thyristors). The static switch is used to isolate the UPS from the utility grid when conditions are not within tolerance.Flywheel Converter - The Flywheel Converter is a semiconductor device that is used to convert the voltage from the DC Bus into AC signals. When the power from the utility is not available, this converter rectifies the AC signals from the flywheel to the DC Bus.Utility Converter - The Utility Converter is a semiconductor device that is used to rectify the AC voltage on the filter node into DC voltage. When the power from the utility is lost, the Utility Converter converts the voltage from the DC Bus to the operating voltage of the system and the operating frequency of the system.
