Description of Change: Improved ignition transformers have been developed for use in the above G3500B Engines. The new transformers have a more rugged design that will provide improved service life. The construction of the new transformer results in a new resistance curve.Adaptable To: The new transformers are adaptable to all of the G3500B Engines and Generator Sets that are listed above. The new transformers are directly interchangeable with the original transformers. Both the new transformers and the old transformers may be used together in the same engine. Illustration 1 is a graph for the resistance of the former transformers. Illustration 2 is a graph for the resistance of the new transformers.

Resistance of the new transformersThe new transformers will have a lower "% secondary voltage" reading when displayed on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). When a new spark plug is installed, the "% secondary voltage" may read "0%" until the spark plug has accumulated some operating hours. At higher voltages, the readings on Cat ET will also be lower, but by a smaller margin.The temperature rating of the new transformers are 120 °C (248 °F). This temperature is identical to the former transformers. The new transformers have a softer potting material. Avoid exposing the new coil to temperatures that are higher than the temperature rating of the transformer.Table 1 lists the former part numbers and the new part numbers.
