MID 027 CID 2991 FMI 12Conditions Which Generate This Code:
Illustration 1 g01941579
Connections of the primary shifter and the secondary shifter
This diagnostic code is associated with the secondary shifter. This diagnostic code is recorded when the ECU reads a problem that is internal to the shifter. The Cat data link is an input and an output of all electronic control modules. The data link is designed to carry communications between all electronic control modules. The data link is not a visible component. The data link consists of internal control circuits and the connecting wire harness. The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
The shifter is not recognized by the ECU.
The shifter has failed.
The part number for the software of the ECU is incorrect.
The ECU has failed.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear these diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 2991 FMI 12 is active before performing this procedure.Test Step 1. VERIFY THE SOFTWARE VERSION.Note: Check and record the latest software version for the machine electronic controls from SIS.
Verify that the latest version of software has been loaded to the ECU. Expected Result:All of the software is current. Results:
OK - All of the software is current. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - There is a more recent software release that is available.Repair: Flash all controls with the latest software release. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, KENR8291, "Electronic Control Unit - Flash Program".STOPTest Step 2. VERIFY THAT THE SHIFTER IS PRESENT.
Verify that the ECU recognizes the shifter. Expected Result:The ECU recognizes the installation of the shifter. Results:
OK - The ECU recognizes the installation of the shifter.Repair: The shifter may have failed. Replace the shifter.Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - The ECU does not recognize the installation of the shifter. Remove the shifter and then install the shifter. Proceed to Test Step 3.Test Step 3. VERIFY THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE IS PRESENT.
Inspect the harness connectors. Clean the contacts of the harness connectors and check the wires for damage to the insulation that is caused by excessive heat, battery acid, or chafing.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the circuit.
Reconnect all of the harness connectors. Make sure that the connectors are fully seated and that the clips for each connector are completely fastened.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Operate the machine.
Determine if the CID 2991 FMI 12 is active. Expected Result:The CID 2991 FMI 12 is active. Results:
YES - The CID 2991 FMI 12 is active. The problem has not been corrected.Repair: Check the circuit again. It is unlikely that the ECU has failed. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the ECU. Prior to replacing an ECU, always contact your dealership's Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair
