Batteries discharge highly explosive hydrogen gas and can explode and shower you with sulfuric acid if a spark is created near the battery. Batteries can also cause burn injuries when a ring or watch completes a circuit between the positive battery post and the frame of the machine. To prevent injuries always remove all rings and watches and wear safety glasses while work is done on or near the batteries. Use extra caution not to cause sparks near the battery. Disconnect the ground cable first and connect it last.
The following procedure is for the removal of the batteries. If machine is equipped with the cold weather package, repeat this procedure if necessary. 1. Open door assembly (1) on top of fuel tank (2). 2. Turn disconnect switch (3) to the "Off" position. 3. Mark and identify all the cable assemblies for installation purposes. Position cover (4) as shown. Loosen nut (5) and disconnect cable assembly (6) from the battery terminal. 4. Position covers (7), (8) as shown. Loosen nuts (9) and (11). Disconnect cable assemblies (10) and (12) from the battery terminals. 5. Remove two locknuts (15), the washers, and battery hold-down assembly (14) from two rods (13).6. Repeat Step 4 for the remaining battery hold-down assembly. 7. Using a suitable lifting device remove two batteries (16) from fuel tank (2). The weight of battery (16) is 54 kg (119 lb). The following steps are for the installation of the batteries.8. Make sure all components are clean of dirt and foreign material prior to installation.9. Check all components for wear or damage and replace if necessary. 10. Using a suitable lifting device install two batteries (16) in fuel tank (2) as shown. The weight of battery (16) is 54 kg (119 lb). 11. Install battery hold-down assembly (14), the washers, and two locknuts (15) to two rods (13).12. Repeat Step 11 for the remaining battery hold-down assembly. 13. Connect cable assemblies (10) and (12) to the battery terminals. Tighten nuts (9) and (11). Position covers (7) and (8) on top of the battery terminals. 14. Connect cable assembly (6) to the battery terminal and tighten nut (5). Position cover (4) on top of the battery terminal. 15. Turn disconnect switch (3) to the "On" position. 16. Close door assembly (1) on top of fuel tank (2).
