Information:
Use this procedure to troubleshoot a problem with the aftertreatment identification module. Also, use this procedure if one of the following diagnostic codes is active or easily repeated.
Table 1
J1939 Code and Description CDL Code and Description Comments
5576-2
Aftertreatment #1 Identification : Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect 3468-2
Aftertreatment #1 Identification Number Module : Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect The installed Clean Emissions Module (CEM) #1 is not a certified match with the engine.
The code is a confirmed emissions regulation violation. A financial penalty and/or legal action may result, if the problem is not corrected immediately. Do not operate the engine with the active fault.
Engine power is derated.
5576-8
Aftertreatment #1 Identification : Abnormal Frequency, Pulse Width, or Period 3468-8
Aftertreatment #1 Identification Number Module : Abnormal Frequency, Pulse Width, or Period Emissions do not conform to regulations. Do not continue to operate the engine with the active fault.
Engine power is derated.
Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Determine if a code is active or logged.
Codes
Result: A code is active or logged.

2. Manually Enter the Aftertreatment Identification Information
The Clean Emissions Module (CEM) identification plate is on the electronics panel.
Factory Passwords are required for this procedure.
A. Confirm that a certified CEM is installed on the engine.
Contact your local Cat dealer for a list of approved CEM configurations for your engine.
B. Record the affected CEM serial number and the configuration group from the CEM Identification Plate.
C. Verify that the affected CEM is a certified match with the engine.
Certified Match
Result: The affected CEM is a certified match with the engine.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The affected CEM is not a certified match for the engine.
Repair: Remove the affected CEM and replace the affected CEM with a certified match for the engine. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly for additional information. When the new CEM is installed, the"Aftertreatment Identification Number Module" will begin communicating with the ECM and the code will be cleared.
When determining if a CEM is a certified match:
The engine ECM will only communicate with the CEM if the total lifetime hours of the engine are less than 100. If the hours are greater than 100, the information from the CEM identification plate must be programmed into the ECM by using Cat ET.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Program the Aftertreatment Identification Number
A. Connect Cat ET.
B. Navigate to the "Aftertreatment Configuration" in the affected "Selective Catalyst Reduction Controller" page.
C. Program the required "Factory Installed Aftertreatment Identification Number" with the serial number from the CEM Identification Plate.
Identification Number
Result: The code is automatically cleared.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
