Information:
Use this procedure to troubleshoot if any of the following event codes are active or logged.
Table 1
J1939 Code and Description Comments
1390-17
Engine Fuel Valve #1 Inlet Absolute Pressure : Low - least severe (1) The pressure provided to the fuel metering valve is less than the trip point and the delay time has expired.
The alarm output is activated.
The code is logged. Probable Causes
Low fuel supply pressure
Obstructed Fuel Line
Incorrect setting of the gas pressure regulatorRecommended Repairs
Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.
Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A 1390-17 code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Monitor the Pressure Provided to the Fuel Metering Valve
A. Monitor the "Engine Fuel Valve #1 Inlet Absolute Pressure" parameter via Cat ET.
Pressure
Result: The pressure supplied to the valve is NOT within specification.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check the Filter Inlet Pressure
A. Check that the main supply pressure to the filter is within specification.
Pressure
Result: The pressure supplied to the regulator is within specification.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The pressure supplied to the regulator is NOT within specification.
Repair: Remedy the cause of the low supply pressure.
4. Check the Filter Outlet Pressure
A. Check that the pressure at the filter outlet is within specification.
Pressure
Result: The pressure drop across the filter is excessive.
Repair: Replace the filter.
Result: The pressure drop across the filter is OK.
The pressure supplied to the regulator is within specification.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Check the GSOV Outlet Pressure
A. Check the pressure at the outlet of the electric Gas Shutoff Valve (GSOV). The GSOV is supplied from the regulator.
Pressure
Result: The pressure is within specification.
Proceed to Step 8.
Result: The pressure is NOT within specification.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Check the Gas Shutoff Valve (GSOV) for proper operation
A. Verify that the valve is fully open when the valve is energized. Verify that the GSOV does not stick in a partially open position.
Operation
Result: The gas shutoff valve is NOT fully opening.
Repair: Repair the GSOV. Replace the GSOV, if necessary.
Result: The gas shutoff valve is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 7.
7. Adjust Regulator
A. Adjust the gas pressure regulator to achieve the correct pressure.
Pressure
Result: The correct pressure is NOT achieved.
Repair: Repair the regulator or replace the regulator.
Result: The correct pressure is achieved and the code still exists.
Proceed to Step 8.
Result: The correct pressure is achieved and the code no longer exists.
8. Check for Obstructions
A. Check the fuel supply lines to the fuel metering valve for obstructions.
B. Check the Inlet screen for the fuel metering valve.
Obstructions
Result: An obstruction was found.
Repair: Remedy the cause of the obstruction.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
