Turn off the battery disconnect switch to disable the entire electrical system.Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position and remove the key when you service the electrical system or any other components.Also turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position and remove the key when the engine will not be used for an extended period of a month or more. This will prevent drainage of the battery.
Never move the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position while the engine is operating. Serious damage to the electrical system could result.
To ensure that no damage to the engine occurs, verify that the engine is fully operational before cranking the engine. Do not crank an engine that is not fully operational.Perform the following procedure to check the battery disconnect switch for proper operation:
With the battery disconnect switch in the ON position, verify that electrical components are functioning. Verify that the electronic modular control panel (EMCP) is displaying information. Verify that the engine will crank.
Ensure that the engine is stopped. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Verify that the following items are not functioning: electrical components, ECMP display, and engine cranking. If any of the items continue to function with the battery disconnect switch in the OFF position, consult your Caterpillar dealer.Note: The EMCP may continue to operate with the battery disconnect switch in the OFF position if the system is equipped with a battery trickle charger. Ensure that the trickle battery charger is turned off before opening the battery disconnect switch.
