Component Code 1306SUBJECT: Oil Filter Leaks on the C15 On-Highway Engines
PROBLEM:
Caterpillar Dealers have been reporting oil filter leaks at the head. Two Root Causes have been identified as the reasons for the leaks. First, it has been determined that there is a sealing issue at the oil filter head. There are two scalloped/draft areas on the oil filter base that are digging and/or cutting the seal when filter is over tightened, causing the leaks. Second, the casting has been known to have minor porosity between an oil passage and a bolthole used for remote mount oil lines, which has been observed to be a second cause of oil leaks. The leaks are causing a minor loss of lubrication oil.
SOLUTION:
Install a 3H-8430 Set Screw with sealant applied into the identified leaking hole (usually the rear/flywheel side hole) that is neighboring the oil filter mounting face of the oil filter base.
When installing a new filter, always take care to read, understand and follow the instructions on the side of the oil filter element. Do not overtighten the filter element.
