This Special Instruction provides information for the installation of transducers on generator sets in order to provide measurement and evaluation of external mechanical vibration characteristics.This Special Instruction is for use on Caterpillar engine equipped generator sets developed in accordance with ISO 8528-9.This Special Instruction applies to Caterpillar engine equipped generator sets that may be:
fixed or mobile
resiliently or rigidly mounted
installed in land and marine applicationsThe vibration measurements that are described in this document provide general information about the engine and generator set vibration characteristics.The vibration characteristics do not provide mechanical stress information for fixed or moving parts that are located on the engine and generator set.The vibration measurements do not provide torsional and linear characteristics of the engine crankshaft or generator rotor shaft.Important Safety Information

Accidental engine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the equipment.To avoid accidental engine starting, disconnect the battery cable from the negative (−) battery terminal. Completely tape all metal surfaces of the disconnected battery cable end in order to prevent contact with other metal surfaces which could activate the engine electrical system.Place a Do Not Operate tag at the Start/Stop switch location to inform personnel that the equipment is being worked on.
High voltage may be present. The power source must be disconnected before working on the equipment. Failure to disconnect the power source could result in injury or death. Verify that the equipment is not energized before performing any maintenance. This work must be performed by trained personnel with correct tools and procedures.

Measuring Device (Transducer) Installation
Note: Transducer attachment to the engine generator set will affect measurement accuracy.Proper attachment methods will limit very low frequency vibrations. Magnetic based transducers are recommended.The following steps must be adhered to.
Maintain a tight grip on the transducer in order to allow gentle contact of the transducer base to the metallic surface.
Place the transducer on the metallic surface.
