Schematic of load check functionFMI 03 is recorded when the transmission electronic control module senses a short to the battery in the relay's circuit.Note: The following procedure may cause additional diagnostic codes. Ignore the additional diagnostic codes. Clear the additional diagnostic codes after FMI 03 has been cleared.FMI 03 is present. The load check function is on regardless of the ground speed or of the switch position. Contact 37 relates to this fault.Test Step 1. CHECK THE RELAY.
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
Remove the load check relay.
Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
Measure the voltage from contact 2 to contact 1.Note: The transmission electronic control module will log an open circuit diagnostic code. Clear this diagnostic code after FMI 03 has been cleared.Expected Result:The measured voltage is approximately battery voltage. Results:
YES - The measured voltage is approximately battery voltage. Proceed to test step 2.
NO - The measured voltage is approximately 5 VDC. The relay has failed.Repair: Replace the relay. Stop.Test Step 2. CHECK THE HARNESS.
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the machine harness from the shift lever transmission control.
Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
Measure the voltage from contact 2 to contact 37.Expected Result:The measured voltage is approximately 0 VDC.Results:
YES - The measured voltage is approximately 0 VDC. The fault is not isolated. Proceed to test step 4.
NO - The measured voltage is approximately battery voltage. There is a short to the battery. The short is in the machine harness.Repair: Repair the harness or replace the harness. Stop.Test Step 3. VERIFY THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE IS PRESENT.
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
Inspect the connectors and inspect the contacts.
Connect the machine harness to the control module.
Install the relay.
Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
Enter the service mode.
Operate the machine.
Check the diagnostic indicator. Note the active diagnostic codes.Expected Result:The diagnostic code is active. Results:
YES - The diagnostic code is active. The condition has not been corrected. The transmission electronic control module may have failed. Proceed to test step 4.
NO - The diagnostic code is not active. The diagnostic code was caused by a poor electrical connection.Repair: Clear the diagnostic code. Stop.Test Step 4. VERIFY THAT THE TRANSMISSION ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE HAS FAILED.
Connect the machine harness to the control module.
Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
Verify that the diagnostic code is present. Verify that the diagnostic code is active.
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
Verify that the diagnostic code is present. Verify that the diagnostic code is active.Expected Result:The diagnostic code is active. Results:
YES - The diagnostic code is active. The transmission electronic control module has failed. Repair: Replace the transmission electronic control module. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace". Stop.
NO - The diagnostic code is not active. Clear the diagnostic code. Stop.
