Start By:a. Connect the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect" for the machine that is being serviced.b. Remove the front tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Remove" for the machine that is being serviced.c. Remove the crankcase guards. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankcase Guards - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.d. Remove the front drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive shaft (Front) - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.e. Remove the oil pressure from the braking system. Refer to Systems Operation Testing and Adjusting, "Braking System Pressure- Release" for the machine that is being serviced. Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, all hoses and all tubes. This will help prevent fluid loss and this will help to prevent contaminants from entering the system.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Drain the oil from the front axle housing into a suitable container. The capacity of the front axle housing is 95 litres (25 US gal). 2. Put identification marks on eight hoses at the top of manifold (1). Disconnect the hoses from the manifold. 3. Put identification marks on parking brake hose (2). Put identification marks on service brake hose (3). Disconnect the hoses. 4. Put a suitable container under those assemblies (4) and (5) to contain the oil in the hose assemblies. Disconnect hose assemblies (4) and (5) from the manifolds. Cap and plug the openings immediately. 5. Install Tooling (A) on both sides of the axle assembly, as shown. Attach a hoist and suitable lifting chains to Tooling (A). 6. Remove lubrication lines (6) from the bottom of the suspension cylinders. Remove the bolts, the washers, the nuts and the retainers from suspension cylinder lower pivots (7). Remove the suspension cylinder lower pivot pins. 7. Remove nut (8) and retainer (9) from the inside of the suspension pivots on both sides of the machine. 8. Remove the six bolts, washers and spacers (10) from the outside of the suspension pivots on both sides of the machine. Use two5/8inch - 11 NC Forcing Screws to remove pin (11).9. Put identification marks on shims, located under the head of pin (11), for assembly purposes.10. Carefully remove the front axle housing from the front frame of the machine and lower to the ground. The weight of the front axle housing and suspension frame assembly is 3800 Kg (8380 lb).
