--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------Description of Change: In some conditions of operation, problems have been caused by the small amount of clearance between the front guard assembly of the bottom guard group and the transmission case on 528 Skidders. If the machine is driven over a large rock or similar material, it is possible for the impact to bend the guard enough to cause contact with the transmission and damage the case. The point of contact is one of the bolts that holds the access cover for the transmission drain plug. To prevent this problem, a new front guard assembly has been released which uses a single access cover instead of the two covers now used, and gives more clearance for the transmission. With the new guard assembly, a new plate assembly is used in place of the 8K8039 Plate Assembly, and the access cover hardware is changed.
Adaptable To: The new parts, used together, will be directly adaptable to all earlier 528 Skidders, but will not be available until later this year. Until the new parts are available, a field modification can be made to increase clearance between the guard and transmission case. A Special Instruction, Form SMHS7186, is available with complete information for the modification. When the new parts become available, the 8K8043 Front Guard Assembly will be canceled and the new parts used for service replacement. The parts will be shown in Column 3 of the NPR (Numerical Parts Record) as replacement for 8K8043, and in Parts Books and Parts Microfiche.
