Start By:a. Connect the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect" for the machine that is being serviced.b. Install the body retaining pins. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Body Retaining Pins - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.c. Remove the rear tires and rims. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Remove" for the machine that is being serviced.d. Remove the rear drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive shaft (Rear) - Remove and Install" for the machine that is being serviced.e. Remove the oil pressure from the braking system. Refer to Systems Operation Testing and Adjusting, "Braking System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced. Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, all hoses and all tubes. This will help prevent fluid loss and this will help to prevent contaminants from entering the system.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Drain the oil from the rear axle housing into a suitable container. The capacity of the rear axle housing is 95 litres (25 US gal). 2. Disconnect brake cooling hoses (1) and (2) from each wheel end. 3. Disconnect brake hoses (3) and (4) from the slack adjuster and parking brake manifolds. 4. Remove breather assembly (5) from the rear differential housing.
Typical Example5. Install Tooling (A) on each sides of the axle assembly, as shown. Attach a hoist and suitable lifting chains to Tooling (A). 6. Remove the 16 nuts, the washers and 8 bolts (6) that hold the rear axle housing to the rear frame.7. Lower the rear axle housing to the ground. Remove the rear axle housing from the machine. The weight of the rear axle housing assembly is 3000 kg (6615 lb).
