The spacer prevents movement of internal parts during shipment. After removal of the spacer, and before assembly of the pulley, do not put the alternator in a vertical position. With the alternator in a vertical position, it is possible for the rotor to move down and cause damage to the rotor or other internal parts.
The pulley must be assembled with the rotor in a horizontal position, not vertical. Correct assembly of the pulley puts the rotor in the correct position and prevents damage to internal parts.
