Reversing ProceduresThis diagram illustrates a typical rolling pattern if an equal distance is maintained between the paver and the compactor during reversals.

Rolling in ArcsAn arc pattern may be used in order to increase the quality of the mat. An arc pattern may only be carried out when there is sufficient space. This method permits all reversals to be done on the precompacted asphalt mix. The chance of ridges is eliminated. Note that the arcs should not be run over a crown.

Changes in Rolling ZonesChanges in the rolling zones should only be made on the compacted surface. Note that this guideline should be followed when you align the compactor for the next pass and also when you return the compactor to the starting point for the next rolling sequence.

Rolling a Longitudinal Joint (Initial Pass) (A) Cold material. (B) Hot material. (C) 150 mm (6 inch).Ensure that the compactor is primarily on the cold side of the mat when you are compacting on a longitudinal joint. Overhang the drums onto the hot side by about 150 mm (6 inch). This will pinch the hot mix into the joint surface. At the same time, the weight of the compactor will be supported by the compacted surface. The drum should be run static. The reverse pass should be made in the same position.

(A) Cold material. (B) Hot material. (C) 150 mm (6 inch)On the next pass and the initial pass, overhang the drums about 150 mm (6 inch) on the cold side.

Rolling a Crown (A) 150 mm (6 inch)Begin rolling a crown on the low side. On the top passes, overhang the drum by about 150 mm (6 inch) on both sides of the crown. Never roll on top of the crown.

Rolling a Superelevation (A) 150 mm (6 inch).Begin rolling a superelevation on the low side. Follow the previous guideline for unconfined edges. Overlap each pass by 150 mm (6 inch). When the top is reached, overhang the drums. Follow the same procedure for overhanging the drums when you roll a crown. When you are compacting on a side slope, try vibrating with only the lead drum in order to prevent the machine from sliding downward. Run both drums static if this problem persists.

End of Paver Pass (1) The edges are feathered out. (2) Planks can be used for a sharp edge.At the end of the paving day, the asphalt should be feathered out. Additionally, the asphalt should be rolled water tight. If a square edge is desired, a board should be placed in front of the paver screed. This board should be as thick as the compacted surface. The paver is then driven over the board and the asphalt mix is feathered out over a sheet of plastic or other suitable material. The next paving day, the excess asphalt and the board are removed. This will reveal a square, clean edge.
