Remove & Install Timing Gears & Plate
Start By:a. remove timing gear cover
Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants put into the system may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Before any timing gears are removed, make sure "C" mark on crankshaft gear (1) is in alignment with "C" mark on camshaft gear (2). 1. Remove two bolts (3), thrust plate (4) and idler gear (5). 2. Remove the bearing from idler gear (5) with Tool (A). 3. Remove four bolts (6) and camshaft gear (2). 4. Remove six bolts (7). 5. Remove timing gear plate (8) and the timing gear plate gasket. The following steps are for the installation of the timing gears and plate.6. Clean the old timing gear plate gasket from the contact surfaces of the timing gear plate and cylinder block. 7. Install a new timing gear plate gasket on the cylinder block. Cut the timing gear plate gasket even with the bottom face of the cylinder block. 8. Put timing gear plate (8) in position on the cylinder block and install six bolts (7). 9. Install camshaft gear (2) with the "C" mark on the camshaft gear in alignment with the "C" mark on the crankshaft gear. Tighten four bolts (6) to a torque of 55 7 N m (41 5 lb ft).10. Use Tooling (A) to install the bearing in the idler gear (5). The end of the bearing must be 3.00 0.25 mm (.118 .010 in)below the face of the idler gear hub. 11. Be sure the oil hole in the shaft for the idler gear (5) is open. Install idler gear (5). Put thrust plate (4) in position with the finished side facing toward idler gear (5) and install bolts (3).End By:a. install timing gear cover
