(6) Input shaft The planetary transmission has six forward gears and one reverse gear. REVERSE and NEUTRAL use only torque converter drive. At lower ground speeds, FIRST gear and SECOND gear use torque converter drive. As the ground speed increases in SECOND gear, the lockup clutch of the torque converter engages. This function provides SECOND gear with direct drive. The torque converter is always in direct drive for gears THIRD through SIXTH. Table 1 shows the clutches that are engaged for each gear.

SIXTH 2 and 4 The planetary transmission consists of two rotating clutches, three stationary clutches, and three planetary units. This configuration provides six forward gears and one reverse gear. No. 1 clutch (1) and No. 2 clutch (2) are the rotating clutches.The planetary transmission is bolted to the housing for the torque converter. Input shaft (6) for the planetary transmission is splined and bolted to the torque converter.The input shaft (6) is also splined to the retarder for transmissions that are equipped with a retarder.

(10) Transmission output speed sensor Engine speed sensor (7), torque converter output speed sensor (9), and transmission output speed sensors (10) are used to monitor the various speeds of the transmission. The information from these speed sensors is sent to the transmission ECM (8). The ECM uses the information to control the shifting and calibration of the transmission.
