The correct lubrication oil temperature is critical for the following reasons:
Keeping the bearing at the correct operating temperature
Ensuring sufficient lubrication effect
Maintaining the correct viscosity of the lubrication oil. Refer to Operation & Maintenance Manual, SEBU8852, "Sleeve Bearing - Check" for more information.Vibrations
All motors are subjected to and designed to withstand vibrations. Large vibrations might cause various parts in the bearing to function differently than intended.Heavy vibrations can cause different phenomena in the oil film between the shaft and the white metal. Heavy vibrations result in bearing failures more likely than oil leakages.Heavy vibrations can cause the bearing housing parts to set. The bearing housing parts may loosen up to allow oil to enter the split surface between the upper and lower bearing housing halves. The vibrations will cause the bearing housing parts to move in respect of each other. This movement can cause a pumping effect in such a way that oil will be pumped in and out from the split surface. This pumping will eventually remove the sealant and cause the bearings to leak.Refer to Operation & Maintenance Manual, SEBU8852, "General Construction - Check" for specific information about motor vibrations and noise problems.Air pressure inside the bearing (for flood lubrication)
The bearing housing is not a hermetic compartment. Therefore, any overpressure inside the bearing housing will escape the bearing housing through the labyrinth seals. In escaping, the air will bring oil mist with it causing the bearing to leak.Overpressure inside the bearing is normally caused by other components than the bearing. The most common reason for overpressure inside the bearing is overpressure in the oil return piping when the bearing is equipped with an external oil system.Air pressure outside of bearing (for flood lubrication)
Under pressure outside of the bearing will allow air to escape from inside the bearing. In escaping, the air will bring oil with it causing the bearing to leak oil. Under pressure outside the bearing is normally not caused by the bearing but by parts outside the bearing.
