Remove the rocker shaft assemblies.
Remove the exhaust manifold.
Remove the valve cover bases.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Remove any sensors or electrical components from the cylinder head.

Remove bolts (2) and water lines (1). Remove the bolt and locknut (3) .

Remove bolt (4) from the timing advance housing.
Remove bolt (5) and support (6) .

Remove bolt (7) and support (8). Remove the remaining ten bolts and supports along the intake side of the cylinder head.

Attach Tool (A) to the cylinder head.
Remove the twenty bolts (9) that attach the cylinder head to the cylinder block.
Use Tool (A) and remove the cylinder head. The weight of the cylinder head is approximately 172 kg (380 lb).
