Removal Procedure
Table 1
Required Tools
Tool Part Number Part Description Qty
A 4C-9832 Engine Rollover Stand 1 Start By:
Remove the rocker shaft assemblies and the pushrods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft and Push Rods - Remove".
Remove the front drive housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Drive Housing - Remove".
Remove the balancer gear from the rear gear group. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Gear Group (Rear) - Remove".
Remove the piston cooling jets. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston Cooling Jets - Remove and Install".
The rocker shaft assemblies and the push rods must be removed to ensure that the inlet and exhaust valves are not open. If the valves are open the face of the inlet and exhaust valves could be damaged when the pistons are pushed into the cylinder, away from the crankshaft.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Use Tooling (A) to turn the engine in a horizontal position. The engine can also be supported with blocks. The G3516 Engine weigh approximately 6447 kg (14200 lb). Note: It is not necessary to remove the counterweights from the crankshaft, if the piston and connecting rod assemblies have been removed from the engine.
Illustration 1 g00577386
Place identification marks on counterweights (1). Remove counterweights (1) from the engine.
Illustration 2 g00577387Note: Ensure that the journals of the crankshaft are not scratched by the connecting rods.
Remove connecting rod bearing caps (2) and push the connecting rods away from the crankshaft.
Illustration 3 g00577388
Remove the center main bearing cap and two thrust plates (3) from each side of the center main bearing.
Illustration 4 g00577389
Typical example
Use two of the bolts from the flywheel and install one bolt in each end of crankshaft (4).
Attach a suitable lifting device to crankshaft (4). Remove remaining main bearing caps (5) and remove crankshaft (4) from the engine. The crankshaft for the G3516 Engines weighs approximately 762 kg (1602 lb).
Remove the upper halves of the main bearings and also remove the upper halves of the connecting rod bearings.
Illustration 5 g00577390
If necessary, remove bolts (7) and crankshaft gear (6) from each end of the crankshaft.
