The HVOF Identification Tool is a portable, battery operated, fixed frequency eddy current instrument designed specifically to sort between HVOF and chromium coatings.The general-purpose probe supplied with the instrument is designed to make the readings reliable and repeatable.Performance Features
The HVOF Identification Tool offers state-of-the-art design in simplicity of operation and ease of use. Fully derated circuitry provides for reliability and long maintenance-free service. The instrument is housed in a high impact resistant ABS enclosure designed for continuous operation under most environmental conditions.All controls needed for the normal use of the instrument are located on the front panel. These include the POWER switch, BALANCE, and SENSITIVITY controls. The PROBE connector is BNC, the most common in the industry today.The battery compartment, located in the rear of the instrument, houses the 9 V alkaline battery which powers the unit.Operation Instructions
General Operation
The HVOF Identification Tool utilizes the eddy current principle, wherein induced currents are affected by changes in test part characteristics and homogeneity. Variations in material conductivity, permeability, or physical characteristics cause impedance changes in the test probe attached to the bridge circuit. This impedance change causes the bridge to become unbalanced and the resultant amplified unbalanced voltage is indicated by a change in the position of the pointer on the front panel meter.Tool Set-Up
Connect the 396-9343 Probe to the tool Probe connector.
Turn on the power switch.
Set the BALANCE control at mid-range, and the SENSITIVITY control to the lowest setting (down).
Place the probe on the surface of the supplied HVOF half ring (396-9344) and adjust the BALANCE control so that the meter pointer is in the red band of the scale.

Lift the probe off the HVOF half ring, and the meter goes off scale to the right of the red band. Now place the probe back onto the HVOF half ring and verify that the meter needle returns to the red band as in the previous step. This step verifies readings on HVOF.
