Personal injury or death may occur from failure to adhere to the following warnings.The boom can fall if a control is moved or if a hydraulic component fails.Do not rely on a hydraulic cylinder to hold the boom.Support the boom during all service procedures.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
When raising or lowering the boom with a dead engine air may become entrapped in the boom cylinder hydraulic circuit. Prior to putting the machine back into service it will be necessary to purge the air from the circuit. Failure to purge the air from the boom cylinder hydraulic circuit may result in failure of the boom cylinder piston seals.

Purging screw (1) is located on the front control valve. Slowly loosen the purging screw. Opening purging screw (1) will allow oil to flow into the rod end of the boom cylinder.
Purging screw (2) is located on the front control valve. Slowly loosen the purging screw. Opening purging screw (2) will allow oil to flow out of the head end of the boom cylinder.
Make sure that the front implement has been completely lowered onto the ground. Tighten purging screw (2) .
Tighten purging screw (1).
Purge air from the boom cylinders. For more information on purging air from hydraulic cylinders, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Hydraulic System - Purge" for your machine.
Make all necessary repairs before you operate the machine.For additional information, consult your Caterpillar dealer.
