Engine Identification
Cat engines are identified with serial numbers, with performance specification numbers, and with arrangement numbers. In some of the cases, modification numbers are used. These numbers are shown on the Serial Number Plate and the Information Plate that are mounted on the engine.Cat dealers need these numbers to determine the components that were included with the engine. Information on the Serial Number Plate and the Information Plate allows dealers to identify replacement part numbers.Serial Number Plate

The Serial Number Plate is on the left side of the cylinder block near the rear of the engine.The following information is stamped on the Serial Number Plate: engine serial number, model, and arrangement number.

The Information Plate is on the left side top surface of the cylinder block in front of the front cylinder head.
