Engine News SEBD9298, June 2000, "A New Rubber Boot Is Available To Help Protect The Actuator Shafts In The Hydrax System". Disregard this article. See the article that follows.Description of Change: A new rubber boot is used to protect the actuator shafts in the Hydrax System on these engines. The new boot will prevent debris from contacting the actuator shaft.Adaptable To: The new 193-7879 Boot is effective with the engines that are listed above. The new 193-7879 Boot can be used with any actuator group. See the installation procedure that follows.Installing The 193-7879 Boot
Remove the guards that protect the actuator shaft.
Disconnect the linkage from the actuator shaft.
Remove the clevis or the rod end from the end of the actuator shaft.Note: Earlier engines may have actuators that have a position indicator plate. This position indicator plate must be removed and discarded before the boot can be installed.

VIEW A SHOWS THE ACTUATOR SHAFT IN THE EXTENDED POSITION.VIEW B SHOWS THE ACTUATOR SHAFT IN THE RETRACTED POSITION. (1) Rod End (2) 193-7879 Boot (3) Actuator Shaft (4) Nut
Put the 193-7879 Boot (2) in position on the actuator shaft (3). The boot is shaped in order to fit tightly on the flats on the end of the actuator shaft.
Install the clevis or the rod end (1) on the end of the actuator shaft (3) .
Rotate the actuator shaft in order to align the flats on the large end of the boot (2) with the flats on the nut (4) .
Move the actuator shaft in and out of the actuator. Be sure that the boot folds inward correctly when the actuator shaft is moved into the actuator.Note: Be sure that the boot does not kink or bind during movement of the actuator shaft. If the boot is not correctly installed, areas of stress can develop on the boot. These areas of stress may result in cracks or tears in the boot. Be sure that the boot folds properly during full travel of the actuator shaft.
Connect the linkage to the actuator shaft.
Install the guards that protect the actuator shaft.Maintenance
Inspect the 193-7879 Boot for cracks or tears after 5,000 hours of operation. You do not need to remove the boot for this inspection. If the boot is damaged, replace the boot. After 10,000 hours of operation, remove the boot for inspection. If the boot is damaged, replace the boot.Note: During normal operation, the actuator might exhibit a small amount of fluid leakage. This is not detrimental to the performance of the actuator and this will not damage the boot. Wipe the actuator shaft and the interior of the boot with a rag that is clean and dry. Then reassemble the components. If oil leaks out of the boot, this is an indication of a worn seal. Inspect the piston and the shaft for wear. If necessary, replace the components.
