Schematic of the Torque Converter Output Speed Sensor
This diagnostic code is for the Torque Converter Output Speed Sensor. This diagnostic code is recorded when the signal of the torque converter output speed sensor is erratic, intermittent, or incorrect. This diagnostic code occurs when the following conditions exist:
The speed of the engine is greater than 500 RPM.
The oil temperature is greater than 50 °C (122 °F).
The transmission is in NEUTRAL.
There is no speed output from the torque converter.System Response:The ECM is unable to calculate the speed ratios. The quality of the shift will be affected. Note: The machine must be moving in order for the diagnostic code to be present. Test Step 1. CHECK THE RESISTANCE OF THE SENSOR.Before performing the following procedures, verify that the battery power in the ohmmeter is good and verify that the ohmmeter is set to the proper range of resistance.
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the machine harness from the speed sensor.
Measure the resistance between the two contacts of the connector for the speed sensor. Expected Result:The range of measured resistance should be 800 to 1600 ohms for the temperature range of −40 °C (−40 °F) to 150 °C (302 °F). The resistance at ambient temperature should read 1000 to 1200 ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance measures 1000 to 1200 ohms at ambient temperature or the resistance measures 800 to 1600 ohms for the temperature range of −40 °C (−40 °F) to 150 °C (302 °F). The speed sensor has not failed. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The resistance does not measure 1000 to 1200 ohms at ambient temperature or the resistance does not measure 800 to 1600 ohms for the temperature range of −40 °C (−40 °F) to 150 °C (302 °F). Repair: The speed sensor is failed. Replace the sensor. Adjust the speed sensor properly after installation. See Testing and Adjusting, "Speed Sensor - Adjust".STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN IN THE MACHINE HARNESS.
At the machine harness connector for the speed sensor, place a jumper between the two contacts.
Disconnect the machine harness connector J2 from the ECM.
At the J2 harness connector, measure the resistance between J2-23 and J2-29. Expected Result:There should be less than 5.0 ohms of resistance. Results:
OK - There is less than 5.0 ohms resistance. The machine harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - There is not less than 5.0 ohms resistance.Repair: There is an open circuit in the machine harness. The open is in wire E908-BR(Brown) or wire E909-WH(White) of the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOPTest Step 3. CHECK THE SIGNAL FOR A SHORT.
If a jumper was used in a previous step, remove the jumper.
At the J1 and J2 harness connectors, measure the resistance between J2-23 (wire E909-WH(White)) and all sources of positive voltage and ground. The possible sources of positive voltage are contacts J1-1, J1-4, J1-6, J1-8, J1-10, J1-11, J1-12, J1-17, J1-18, J1-40, J2-1, J2-2, J2-7, J2-8,
