Caterpillar engines are identified by serial numbers and by arrangement numbers. These numbers are shown on the engine serial number plate. Caterpillar dealers need these numbers in order to determine the components that were included with the engine. This permits accurate identification of replacement part numbers.Serial Number Plate
The engine serial number plate is located on the upper left side of the engine block above the fuel injection pump.
